BDC-101 – gas migration prevention agent

BDC-101 is a non-toxic, high-molecular-weight cationic polymer solution. It is used as a cementing additive preventing the formation of gas channels and gas migration in the annular space during cementing operations or when setting cement plugs. The agent should only be used with anionic cement additives such as lignosulfonate retarders or slurry friction reducers. Laboratory testing is recommended to determine the type of friction reducer, so as to prevent synergy effects or polymer precipitation from the solution. BDC-101 freezes at -10°C, which can be lowered by adding methanol. The maximum temperature at which BDC-101 can be used is 90°C.

Dosage

The recommended dosage of BDC-101 is 5–20 litres per 100 kg of dry cement, depending on its type and quality.

Generally 10 litres is sufficient, but the optimal dose should be determined by laboratory testing

before the job. If necessary, add a retarder to obtain adequate pumping time. If

needed, microsilica can also be added to improve slurry rheology.

Test procedure

1. Conduct laboratory tests under simulated field conditions in an HTHP consistometer and

an HTHP filter press.

2. Setting retarders can be added to obtain sufficient pumping time.

3. Finally, check whether the HTHP cement is settling.

Suggestion: test the slurry in the HTHP consistometer for some time, shorter than the final thickening time, and

then transfer the slurry both to the filter press and to the cement settling cylinder. If necessary,

microsilica can be added to improve rheology and/or settling. BDC-101 requires no

anticoagulant additives. The product can be used with Portland, slag and pozzolan cement, with bentonite

or attapulgite or without them, in fresh and salt water up to full saturation. Adding 2% calcium chloride to BDC-

101 improves its effectiveness.
